They say, “find a job that fulfills your passion or purpose.”
Who are “They” anyway?
On it’s face, this seems like a great idea.
What could be better than doing work that you love doing?
If that work is serving people in a way that they need, then you figured it out, no need to keep reading.
However, many younger people (older people are not exempt) are following their passions, but not making real income, and still feeling unfulfilled.
The reason is that it’s too self-focused.
Following your passion may not serve anyone, or just not enough people in any meaningful way.
Passion vs. Valuable Skills: Understanding the Difference:
Passion can be a driving force.
I love to fish and ride motorcycles.
However, trying to turn that into a business could prove difficult as it doesn’t help anyone but me.
I might be able to monetize a media platform if I can create content around it,
or start a fishing guide company,
or start a motorcycle company.
However, these ideas instantly pull me out of what I want to do, and into how I can serve others.
The Importance of Aligning with People’s Needs:
When starting a business or creating a product, it is essential to align with people’s needs.
People will pay money for solutions.
The solution that solves a bigger problem, gets a bigger paycheck.
By focusing on a group of people’s problems, you can create a solution that helps them and gets you what you want.
You will need to do market research, look for gaps, and make products or services that fill them,
Passion may get you started and excited.
But Creating value will get you loyal and paying customers.
Develop Rare and Valuable Skills:
You don’t need to invent something new.
You can research the highest paid skills on Google and know what companies and customers are paying well for.
These are skills that help companies and customers make money, cut costs, or enhance their lives in some way.
Here’s a list of highly-paid skills that you don’t need a college degree to learn:
Copywriting
Video and/or Audio Production
Sales and Sales Management
Web Design
Data Analytics
Content Creation
Software Development
There are many more, but if you are looking to do something new, maybe these will get your brain going.
These skills will provide a foundation, and then your passion will help you keep learning to stay relevant.
Products that genuinely serve people’s needs will attract loyal customers.
The beautiful part here is that if you become effective, you will get all the recognition, success, and accolades you desire.
Fulfillment through Entrepreneurship:
Now it’s about to come full circle.
Learning valuable skills and creating products that serve people will lead to immense personal fulfillment.
You will discover yourself.
You will find purpose.
You will make a mountain of money (I’m talking Scrooge McDuck money).
There’s nothing wrong with passion about things you love.
But, When it comes to your life work look to serve others.
