Most of our subconscious beliefs are supplanted in our minds by the time we reach 18 years.
If you understand the impact of that first statement,
then you know that if you want to live differently than you do now, you have some work ahead of you.
Your subconscious mind is trying to make your life easier and keep you from danger.
It is processing your environment and responding about one million times faster than your conscious mind.
The subconscious is running most of the processes behind the scenes.
It is filtering everything in your environment way before the conscious mind grasps what is going on.
This filter is making decisions for you even before the conscious mind receives the information.
So depending on what stories your subconscious decided about who you are growing up,
it’s making those beliefs your reality before you even get to think about it.
Many of these beliefs are limiting and holding you back.
I want to talk about those today and how to overcome them.
That way, you can consciously decide better and get your subconscious on your side working for you.
Where Do These Limiting Beliefs Come From?
At some point while you were young, events happened in your life that were hard to deal with or even traumatic.
Your brain searches for meaning during these times and you decided something about yourself based on what you were going through.
You were not old enough to see that bad things happen and it doesn’t define anything about us.
So, you internalized it and it became an anchor for your subconscious to use to define your world.
It will stack up the evidence in your life to prove that this is true.
I will give you an example from my life.
My parents divorced when I was ten.
Up to that point, I had believed that I had the perfect childhood (not really true).
In that moment I decided that the world was not going to give me what I wanted.
It would get my hopes up and then pull the rug out from under me.
Whenever a situation like this would show up in my life, my brain would point out that this was who I was and use the situation as evidence.
Even worse, I would attract people into my life that would prove this point to me repeatedly.
The real truth is that there is just as much evidence in my life to prove the complete opposite.
However, the subconscious really tries to keep you from seeing that.
It is protecting you.
The Heavy Cost of Limiting Beliefs
Limiting beliefs keep you from where you want to be and steal your joy.
You will use them to self-sabotage and keep yourself locked in.
Your mind is chemically addicted to the way you think and will do its best to keep you where you are.
It’s taking a toll on you, your relationships, and your success.
If you think about it honestly, you know this to be true.
Most people will not pay the price to take themselves on and overcome their subconscious.
However, understand the prices you (and the people in your life) are already paying by not doing it.
The Powerful Path to Freedom
So, how do we fight this subversive puppet master?
The subconscious mind responds to evidence.
You have to give it overwhelming evidence that something else is true.
There are probably multiple ways to do it.
You can spend a week or two at a retreat designed to dig into those beliefs and help you change.
Another way that is very effective is writing down why the new truth is true.
For example, if I believe that I am not a good writer,
I could spend some time writing down 200 reasons why I am actually a good writer.
This seems so simple, but it works.
Most people won’t do it because it is simple and it’s also work.
You can use this tool to change any belief and behavior in your life.
It provides overwhelming evidence to your subconscious mind of the new belief and so it takes it in as truth.
Be a little realistic.
You’re not going to sprout wings and start flying.
Creating Your Success Movie
Remember to spend some time visualizing yourself doing the things you are afraid of,
or having the life you desire.
The subconscious responds well to this kind of brain activity.
It will help speed things along.
The Journey Continues
After you try this, give it time to work.
You may not feel any different after doing the exercise, but your brain will be responding differently to your environment.
You will notice yourself thinking differently.
Keep at it, and you will get there.
I know you will because the way you think has gotten you exactly where you are now.
