When I first started my online business, I would tell people I was an entrepreneur.
Which is kind of funny, because I knew very little about what I was doing.
I got all kinds of reactions and now it’s really part of who I am.
It definitely took time and it has shaped the path I took and how I started responding to challenges.
Over time my behavior changed to match who I believed I was.
I found it was much easier for me to know where my time and energy was going because of what I believed about my identity.
If someone asks you who you are, what do you say?
I’m a parent, chemist, crossfitter, vegan, etc.
Identity is just a construct of the mind.
It’s just an idea you use to determine how you spend your time, money and energy.
Think about how your identity governs so many of your decisions.
Therefore, one way to change behaviors you don’t like about yourself, is to change your identity.
While this sounds simple, it’s likely not easy.
However, if I can become an entrepreneur, you can change your identity as well.
Here are 5 tips to help you on the path to your new identity and living out the life you want:
1. Get Self-Aware
There’s a reason that this is a huge part of 12-step recovery programs.
You really need to be able to look at yourself with the blinders off.
If you can’t see your own behaviors and thoughts that are sabotaging you, then you won’t be able to fix it.
Acknowledging and accepting will move you more quickly to where you want to go.
Do an honest self-assessment without getting emotional about it.
Just note what’s there.
Get feedback if you need help and can handle someone being honest with you.
2. Watch your language
This is part of self-awareness, but I want to point it out because your language will tell you who you believe you are.
If you ask someone trying to eat healthy, they will tell you either, “I can’t eat sweets”, or “I don’t eat sweets”.
“I shouldn’t or can’t smoke” vs. “I’m not a smoker”.
It seems almost the same, but in the mind, these phrases are infinitely different.
One is empowering, while the other is almost a victim state.
One is an identity statement and the other is only about the act.
Listen to the words you use around behaviors you want to change.
3. Be around people that reinforce your desired identity
If you want to stop drinking, you’re not going to get there hanging out at the bar.
That’s an obvious example, but relationships will make or break your desired lifestyle change.
You have to start being around and listening to the people who have the life you want.
They will encourage the behavior you are pursuing.
You will learn how they navigate the challenges you are trying to overcome.
It’s pretty simple, but changing who you spend time around can actually be very painful.
4. Attach yourself to a bigger purpose
This is extremely effective to help you move to action.
If you are part of a group that is doing something bigger than yourself, your identity will change to align with that purpose.
It doesn’t really matter what it is as long as you are passionate about it.
It could be helping people with addictions,
or fitness, personal development
or may even just getting families to spend more time together.
Find a group doing something that you want to be a part of, or start one yourself.
You will find others that have the identity you are trying to change to.
5. Be patient with yourself
It took your entire life to become who you are today.
Some of your identity is based on programs running in your subconscious mind.
This is going to take time and effort to change deep-seated beliefs about yourself.
However, it can be done.
Imagine the best version of yourself.
The time to start moving toward being that person is now.
If you wait, the time will pass and you will become more entrenched in where you are.
